The aim for all of us is that you and your baby are as well as possible before, during and after the birth. Your midwife has the role of looking after your pregnancy specific needs. You have the choice of enlisitng additional support during this time and
massage fits into this category. Massage can relax, energise, put you intouch with your baby, relieve aches and pains and has many more benefits all condusive to you and your baby's well being.
Why is massage important during pregnancy?
When pregnant your body goes through a series of "big" changes (literally!): tissues soften, your posture alters and your back is under additional strain. Of course there are major changes in your life after the birth (other parents said so, but I [Regina] didn't quite believe it until it happened to me). Massage from a qualified pregnancy massage practitioner supports you during these changes.
While you are nurturing your baby inside, massage nurtures you from the outside.
What is good massage?
We think you know when you receive a good massage: it is just right. Often you need to communicate what you expect from your massage: it could be relaxation, connection, nurturing, pain relief, energising, .... Usually there is an element of "right" pressure and pace. You are encouraged to breathe deeper, enjoy, release, "be" on the other side of your skin where you are being touched. If you are able to do that, you receive a good massage. As we are all unique and have different needs and expectations at different times, no two massages will be the same. In pregnancy massage there is another dimension: a growing baby is also involved.
