The lymphatic system The function of the lymphatic system is to collect fluid from the spaces between the cells (interstitia) and to return it to the blood stream. This fluid is like blood plasma, but more diluted (5% protein, 1% salts). It contains germ-fighting cells. On its way it passes through lymph nodes. These act like filters removing unwelcome material, such as cancer cells and germs. Thus the lymphatic system is very important for immunity and fluid balance. | ||||||||
