Oedema caused by anti-depressant

by Sandie
(Leicestershire)

I wonder if anyone else has got this condition from taking a prescribed anti-depressant called Mirtazapene? I was on this drug for 3 years ....in the first year I put on a stone but my GP said not to worry as long as I was getting better. The second year another stone and again the same response. So when my ankles, kness and thighs severely swelled up for no apparent reason Iweighed myself and yes! another stone heavier but this time I was told I was fat! but referred me to the loros clinic, (which was very scary because I knew it was the cancer charoty hospice!)My shins were painful to touch and no matter what blood tests I had, nothing was wrong. Eventually my psychiatrist said he was concerned about my legs because Mirtazapene is known to cause odema.(I'd never heard of it)
Anyway after coming off the tablet within 5 days the swelling began to subside and now (nearly 3 months later) and having been to the Lymphoedema Clinic at LOROS HOSPICE in Leicester I am beginning to improve.......my mood went right down after my change of tablets and it has taken 3 changes of medication, and an exercise bike in short 5 min sessions to get me nearly back to normal!
